Arrive and Start at Kumonocha Cafe

We reached Randen Arashiyama Station at 10:30 on November 23, 2023, after traveling from Osaka-Umeda and transferring to the Randen line. The journey took about an hour on our visit. Heavy autumn crowds already filled the main avenue when we stepped outside.

Starting mid-morning left enough time for our five-hour loop, but placed us directly into peak visitor traffic. From Kyoto Station, the JR Sagano Line to JR Saga-Arashiyama is another practical option; check the current timetable and choose the arrival station that best fits your wider day. We began at Kumonocha Cafe with its cloud-like mousse cake and a matcha latte before entering the busiest streets.

A 10:30 arrival is workable for half a day, but expect peak autumn crowds.

Early Lunch and Togetsukyo Bridge

After an early soba lunch, we walked south toward Togetsukyo Bridge. The river opens onto mountain slopes covered in autumn reds and yellows, but local visitors and tour groups made the waterfront busy during our holiday-season visit.

We continued about five minutes west along the north bank to % Arabica. Its long queue consumed a sizable part of our riverfront time, so treat the coffee as optional when the line threatens the rest of the route. Across the water is the approach to Iwatayama Monkey Park, whose uphill walk would require a separate time allowance; we stayed north of the river instead.

Skip the coffee queue if protecting time for the lookout and Bamboo Grove matters more.

Walk the Riverbank to Arashiyama Park

Coffee in hand, we continued west past the rental-boat docks. The path curves beside the Katsura River beneath red maples and felt calmer than the commercial main street, making this stretch the scenic center of the route rather than merely a transfer between stops.

The river trail turns into a gentle uphill path through Arashiyama Park. At the observation deck, the railing overlooks the Katsura River gorge framed by wooded slopes. The climb is short and mild, but delays earlier in the day can push this stop later than the suggested 14:00 arrival.

Keep moving west along the river; the short incline earns an elevated gorge view.

Navigate the Busy Bamboo Grove

From the park lookout, loop down into the Sagano Bamboo Grove. By early afternoon, its narrow public path was packed wall-to-wall during our visit, making clean photographs unrealistic. We also saw rickshaw-only tracks branching away from the public route; pedestrians cannot use them.

Tenryu-ji sits beside the grove, but we skipped it to protect the relaxed pace of the remaining route. Travelers prioritizing the temple or quiet Bamboo Grove photos should restructure the day around an arrival before 09:00 rather than add both stops to this mid-morning plan.

Arrive before 09:00 for quieter photos; otherwise accept crowds and keep the stop brief.

Tofu Soft Serve at Kyozuan

We returned toward the main shopping street and stopped at Kyozuan for tofu soft serve. The dense ice cream stayed in the cone when we turned it upside down. Its mild soy flavor makes this a quick local snack, and the central location avoids a detour after leaving the grove.

Use this as a quick stop only if earlier queues have not pushed the route behind.

Finish with Butter Taiyaki

Our final stop was Mamemono to Taiyaki, directly opposite Randen Arashiyama Station. Staff placed a thick slice of cold butter inside the freshly baked fish-shaped pastry, where it quickly melted. The location makes it an easy final snack without risking a missed train.

From the station, we continued by Randen train toward central Kyoto for evening foliage viewing at Kiyomizu-dera. If you are ending your day in Arashiyama instead, use this final half hour as schedule padding and verify the shop's current hours before relying on it.

The station-side location makes this the easiest stop to drop if time runs short.
