2026 forecast overview

The first national outlooks point to viewing periods that are later or slightly later than average across much of Japan. High-elevation locations in Hokkaido and central Japan are already beginning to change, while most city forecasts fall between November and early December.

The colour moves south.

Famous autumn leaves spots.

Choose a region to compare two practical foliage destinations, their usual timing and the local conditions worth checking before you go.

Japan's earliest autumn colour begins in Hokkaido's mountains before moving into valleys, onsen towns and city parks.

Daisetsuzan

Kamikawa, Hokkaido

19-Sep to early Oct

Illustration of autumn alpine mountain view at Daisetsuzan National Park

Key highlights

  • Japan's first colour of the season, spreading down from the highest ridges and gullies.
  • Sweeping alpine slopes where dwarf pine, rowan and birch turn red and gold against dark volcanic rock.

Jozankei

Sapporo, Hokkaido

15-Oct to late Oct

Illustration of hot spring resort town surrounded by mountain autumn foliage in Jozankei.

Key highlights

  • A forested river valley running through the onsen town, with maples and birches crowding both banks.
  • Steam from the hot springs drifting between the trees along the riverside walk and the bridges.

Special events

  • Natsutouro lantern light-up in the onsen town: June 1 to October 31, 2026.

Lake Toya

Toyako, Hokkaido

early Oct to late Oct

Illustration of Red autumn maple foliage over Lake Toya in Hokkaido.

Key highlights

  • Red and gold maples ringing the caldera lake, with the wooded island of Nakajima out in the water.
  • Mount Usu and Showa Shinzan rising behind the shore, giving the colour a volcanic backdrop.

Sounkyo

Kamikawa, Hokkaido

19-Sep to mid-Oct

Sounkyo Gorge resort village with autumn foliage and mountain peaks.

Key highlights

  • Sheer columnar cliffs and waterfalls running through the gorge, with colour climbing the rock faces.
  • Above the onsen village the higher slopes turn first, so the colour runs from valley floor to ridge.

Autumn leaves FAQ.

01

Will Japan's 2026 autumn leaves arrive earlier or later than usual?

The first 2026 outlooks point to average or later-than-average timing across much of Japan. Forecasts become more reliable closer to the viewing period, so check again shortly before travelling.

02

Are city forecast dates suitable for every attraction in that region?

No. A city forecast is a regional planning signal. Mountains, gorges and high-altitude lakes can turn several weeks before nearby city parks and temple gardens.

03

Where should I go if I am travelling in September or October?

Prioritise Hokkaido and high-altitude areas such as Daisetsuzan, Tateyama Kurobe, Kamikochi, Tohoku and Okunikko. Central Tokyo and Kyoto are usually too early in October.

04

What if the leaves have not changed yet, or have already fallen?

Use elevation as your backup plan. If lowland colour has not started, look higher or farther north. If mountain leaves are past peak, move toward city parks, temple gardens or southern regions.

05

How should I prepare for an autumn-leaf day trip?

Use layers, bring a wind-resistant outer layer for mountain areas and wear shoes suitable for steps and uneven paths. Confirm the last bus, ropeway or boat departure before leaving.

06

What should I reserve in advance during peak foliage season?

Popular accommodation, limited-entry illuminations, special temple visits, sightseeing trains and boats may require advance booking. For Kyoto and other high-demand areas, book accommodation several months ahead where possible.

Before you go.

Forecast dates can move as temperature, rain, and wind conditions change.

Mountain locations often peak weeks before nearby city centres.

A city forecast is not the same as an individual garden or temple report.

Confirm transport, closures, illumination dates, and ticket rules on the official site.
